Re: Tangerine mutual funds 1% bribe

It's not in the bonuses section, just in the banners. Interesting 4 of 4 family members did NOT receive the banner or the bonus section notification, however Mrs Optionable did receive a letter notification saying she qualifies despite no mention of it when she logs in. Maybe she clicked on the ban...

Re: Need help reviewing ESPP

It makes little sense to use it the way you describe it, you would be giving away most of the 10% discount to: - taxes (unavoidable), - sell commission, - forex ("published by Corporate Finance" does not mean they're not marking it up some percentage point from mid-market), - vagaries of the market,...

Does "Journaling" the security such as Nutrien to US$ account to receive dividends in US$ (avoiding exchange) impact the manner in which the dividends are treated for Canadian tax purposes.
No.

Would the dividend received in US $ be subject to 15 percent withholding tax?

So Mrs. Optional received the offer by mail. But no indication on the Tangerine website neither as a banner or in the Bonuses section where all the offers normally are.

Also, don't give them more details than they need to know. Give them a simple straightforward instruction: please journal X shares of company Y from sub-account A to sub-account B. How I give them the instructions: "This is about the account xxx-F, where I have 200 shares of RY, trade se...

Re: Norbert's gambit - Can$ to US$ or vice versa

I used the shorting method to execute the gambit on TDW... shorted CM first on the USD side and bought it back on the CAD side. I did it in that order to avoid shorting against the box. But when I called in to journal the shares, the trader warned that I probably violated the rule anyways. I shorte...

Re: How often to adjust ACB on USD holdings

When you report for clients, do you consider the FX losses as superficial loss when the large balance of US$ cash is earning interest income every month (ie. purchase of US$)? the short answer is no. If for example start with USD 50,000 , earn 1,000 of USD interest/dividends, dispose of USD 25,000 ...

It's right there in the URL you linked to:

Cash distribution per unit = $0.00000
Reinvested distribution per unit = $0.118423

2017 ETF re-invested distributions -- about re-invested (non-cash, "phantom") distributions, typically capital gains, for ETFs this year.

Re: How often to adjust ACB on USD holdings

I'm betting the vast majority of taxpayers that have a US$ brokerage account fail to report US$ cash gains and losses at all. It's a complicated calculation, after all (has to be done for every sell and buy of every security, done on the US$ sub-account). Wouldn't CRA pick that up as the brokerages...

That is only for multiple transactions of the same security, a point I did acknowledge in my post above. If you sell publicly-traded shares or redeem mutual funds (e.g., mutual fund trust units or shares of a mutual fund corporation) that are denominated in a foreign currency, you may trigger a foreign exchange gain or loss. You must convert the adjusted cost base (ACB) and sale proceeds of the securi...

There is vast disagreement with Adrian's point of view so I would dismiss it outright. CRA is only conceding with respect to annual forex rate for recurring income during a calendar year to simplify calculation and reporting. From my link above, entitled "Calculating and reporting your capital gain...

Assuming a person actually needs that cash, then I would also assume that the person actually needs it NOW. I'll stand by my first position: Age 60 VS 70 you are ahead of the game until you turn 80. Re: How often to adjust ACB on USD holdings

I do the same, but use the annual rate. We had this discussion several times in the past, and there is supporting verbiage from the CRA to use the annual rate not only for recurring income, but for capital transactions too. In the end, it all washes out. This is news to me. I missed this discussion...
