Artis Reit has just paid half the usual distribution, but I've not seen any announcement. Anyone know anything?

transferring a RRIF account holding GICs to another institution

I was hoping to streamline things by closing my RRIF account at Scotia iTrade and transferring all the holdings to my RRIF account at TDDI. A representative at TDDI just told me that I can't transfer any GICs in my Scotia iTrade account to TDDI. Stocks, bonds, and cash are OK. That means I'm stuck with 2 accounts for a few more years until all the iTrade GICs mature. I just want to confirm that I've received accurate information. Thanks.

Rogers, Yahoo mail, and privacy concerns

I am wondering if I should be switching from my rogers.com email. It is enraging to contemplate the hassle of informing contacts etc. about a new email address.

And I left out the joint GICs that a couple could own in both Home Trust and Home Bank.

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

Even though it is possible to use Home Bank and Home Trust at Oaken so a couple can each invest $200,000 in GICs at Oaken (I'm ignoring TFSAs), if one partner dies, the survivor is then well over the CDIC limit. Does anyone here think that's worth worrying about? Or does the survivor just cash in the deceased's GICs and move them elsewhere?

Re: unauthorized withdrawal from my i-Trade RIF

I think Alta Red has nailed it. I'm heading down to their offices today to verify what's on file and make sure the instructions are what I want going forward. They have agreed to reverse the withdrawal - I just had to email a statement of intent to withdraw the minimum this year. Thanks for all the comments.

Re: unauthorized withdrawal from my i-Trade RIF

I forgot to mention that the withdrawal last year was not at my request and was subsequently reversed. I'm annoyed because they just did it again.

unauthorized withdrawal from my i-Trade RIF

i-Trade has just withdrawn the same net amount and the same withholding tax amount from my RIF account as they did last year at this time. Neither amount is what I want. I haven't given them any instructions yet. Also, the amount withdrawn exceeds the cash currently in the account by more than $25,000. Last year they reversed it after a lot of fuss - seemed to blame me. Now I can't get through to a human being after being on hold for hours. How can this happen?!

phone for travel

I bought a Samsung GT-E1190 in Beaune (the store was called Orange France) for a Burgundy hiking trip a few years ago, and I'm wondering if there is any way I can use it during my trip to Greece this year. I called Samsung here, and the fellow said I'd have to go back to France to get it unlocked. Clearly that's not going to happen. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm an absolute technophobe, by the way.

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2016)

I was planning to amalgamate my i-trade RRSP with my TDDI RRSP in advance of RRIFing my accounts this year. I was told that TDDI won't hold Concentra GICs so I'll have to wait three years to consolidate these accounts as 2019 is when the last Concentra GIC matures. Pain in the butt.

Re: Hospital Parking

There are other considerations too. For example, if the radiation treatment is for prostate cancer, the individual will have had to drink copious amounts of water before arriving for the appointment. The less walking, the better. If he urinates before he`s called for the radiation, he has to start drinking water all over again - which will mean he`s parking formuch longer. Ten years ago, Sunnybrook gave cancer patients a pass for free parking, but this is no longer the case.

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2016)

Since I first posted in early February about my husband being unable to set up online access to our joint account with Zag Bank, nothing has been fixed. When I called today I was told by a supervisor that fixing the issue will require rebuilding the system from the ground up and could take months. Apparently other clients are also affected. I am wondering if I should try to retrieve the funds put into their 2-year GIC.

Zag Bank update

Since my earlier note about issues with Zag Bank, they were able to fix my access, but no one has yet been able to explain how my husband can sign on. And yesterday when I tried to log on I got another message about my account not being validated. The supervisor I spoke with this morning couldn`t figure out why and said someone would get back to me. I am having some problems with Zag Bank. Towards the end of January, I opened a joint savings account and subsequently purchased a joint 2-year GIC with the funds. Because the GIC is joint, my husband received an e-mail asking him to set up online banking. He tried to do so but was unsuccessful, and now we have talked to a number of people at Zag, none of whom have been able to help him enroll in online banking. Two days ago we were told they are looking in to it. Today I tried to log in myself, something that worked before, but a message came up saying my account has been disabled. When I called, I spoke to a supervisor who tried to walk me through changing my password but this was unsuccessful. The supervisor is supposed to talk to their ...

I too have been very pleased with the consistency of Oaken's rates, and I'm also very happy with the service. Is there any downside to loading up at Oaken (his, her's, theirs, reg'd, not reg'd) as long as each account is under the CDIC limit? In other words, how much risk is taken on versus keeping $ in big banks?

Re: Studio Tax problem

I discovered what the problem was - I was double clicking on the line item (e.g., 113) which took me to a linked page that looked like the OAS form but wouldn't allow me to enter any numbers. What I was supposed to do was select the applicable form from the list on the left. Once I figured that out, the process was quick and easy. Thanks for inquiring.

Studio Tax problem

I am having trouble entering data on the linked pages of several line items in Studio Tax. For example, I was able to type in the amounts for OAS and CPP payments on the relevant linked page, which then reflected those numbers on page 2 of the form, but when I tried to input the amounts for RIF withdrawal, interest, etc. , nothing happened. I had no trouble with Studio Tax last year so am really stymied (and frustrated). Has anyone else experienced any issue like this?

Re: Travel Insurance

We are planning a couple of trips this year and are investigating options for an annual policy for medical and trip cancellation. After perusing this forum, I tried CAA's underwriter, Orion, which won't sell us an annual policy because we've each had cancer and continue to have follow-up visits to our docs since the end of our respective treatments (his in 2012 and mine in 2011). We're talking PSA tests and mammograms here, for heaven's sake!! We take no medication of any kind. So I talked to a rep at TD Wide Horizons (mentioned on this site) and got a very reasonable quote with no concerns about our medical history. I just want to be sure that TD Wide Horizons is reputable and that no one here has had or heard of any negative experiences.

We're going on an 8-day Panama tour in late February with a focus on the Canal. If we spend an additional three or four days in Panama City (Panama) prior to the tour, does anyone have suggestions of things to see/do or restaurants?

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2014)

Brian 5000 mentions HIS, HERS, and OURS accounts at various institutions to maximize desirable returns. I've been wondering if anyone plans for what happens if HE or SHE dies and the accounts (TFSAs, joint accounts, individual accounts) now belong to the survivor. If the accounts are at a brokerage, they might contain bonds, GICs, stocks or whatever. But if, for example, the accounts are at Oaken and contain GICs, the survivor may find him/herself well over the CDIC limit in the now MY accounts. In other words, does anyone think it's worthwhile or prudent to, for example, limit each TFSA at, for example, Oaken to $50,000. I probably think this way because we're older and have had health scares.
