Re: TD Direct Investing (was Waterhouse) Service

Still says 0 for how many shares of VCN I got through my DRIP

Code: Select all

Trade Date	Settle Date	Description Action Quantity Price Commission Net Amount
14 Feb 2024	09 Jan 2024	VANGUARD FTSE CDA ALL ETF TXPDDV	-y,yy -	- $xxx.xx
14 Feb 2024	09 Jan 2024	VANGUARD FTSE CDA ALL ETF DRIP	0 -	- -$xxx.xx
where $xxx.xx is the same amount for both (ie: not adjusted for the cash remainder after whole shares are purchased). I don't track things well enough to know if my holdings actually got incremented or not.

Re: BCE (Symbol-BCE)

I'm praying here that Freedom/Quebecor/Videotron/Wind/$NextWeek'sName makes a big bet on high/no-limit fixed-wireless home internet. Would that work in high density areas? How would you control for interference? I suppose you could use more spectrum, and there's lots in the 60 Ghz and above, but I don't think the equipment is commercially available yet. Also there aren't nearly enough antenna sites yet, and I think that's going to be a big problem. It's all a big "it depends". Spectrum can be nearly infinitely re-used through smaller and more directional cells. Licensed spectrum should limit interference. Would be interesting for Quebecor to team up with an electric utility for mass rollout of small cells. At least in the Bell Wi...

Re: BCE (Symbol-BCE)

I'm praying here that Freedom/Quebecor/Videotron/Wind/$NextWeek'sName makes a big bet on high/no-limit fixed-wireless home internet. That's what T-Mobile now has: self-install home routers with integrated directional antennae. It's amazing what's possible when you don't have a wireline division to answer to. It won't cut it for terminally online people like me, but for a good chunk of the population, it would work. Even when I work from home, I use low- single digit gb/day over the VPN in a shift. And that includes some videoconference time. Full-screen screenshare doesn't draw much of a load. Quebecor/Videotron doesn't have a big wireline business to cannibalize ex-Quebec, and even in Quebec, Cogeco is the incumbent in less-dense areas: wh...

Re: What is the value of your TFSA today

Can someone do a calc of what a tfsa would be worth today if they maxed out their contributions and put it all into something like VCN, VTI and/or VT? (Canadian total stock index, US total stock index and world total stock index) on Jan1 of each year (with dividends reinvested but loss of any withholding taxes)?

Need to know if I’ve beat the market or not.

I know I've beat a 0% return (in which case you'd have exactly $95k inside today)

Anyone have experience/opinions buying the Bankers Acceptances (or T-Bills?) on the Fixed Income page here?: https://webbroker.td.com/waw/brk/wb/wbr/static/main/index.html#/page/fixed-income Minimums are usually $5k for the BAs and last I checked, they paid a hair over 5%. There's usually nothing shown on a weekend, so you have to check during business hours (or at least a weekday). Potential way to get a bit more yield (but risk) than their savings accounts like TDB8150 paying 4.55% ? And more yield than their money market accounts like TDB164 paying 4.91% , because you're not paying an MER? You lose diversification if you buy a single TD Bankers Acceptance, but you're also buying just a (lower risk?) Bankers Acceptance instead of a a mix ...

BNN Bloomberg wrote:The Canadian government will approve Royal Bank of Canada’s landmark deal to acquire HSBC Holdings Plc’s Canadian operations.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s office is set to issue a statement allowing the deal, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the decision.
A statement that will be released on the Friday of a long long weekend, and a leak the evening before to soften it, are signs that it will be well-received by the public, right?

I wonder if BNS is planning on exiting the Colombia entirely, or just Colombia-facing services. They have pretty big ops there doing customer response work for Canadian/US clients and higher level back-office work. Dominican Republic too. Under the name ScotiaGBS.

Unsure how tightly they're integrated with local services there.

I guess this one is more of a hedgefund, but recently got a court appointed receiver https://documentcentre.ey.com/#/detail-engmt?eid=563 Incorporated in 2019 by a single director, officer and shareholder and they remain so, well, until they suddenly weren't. $95 million in assets. Great returns in its first few years per the media. Old school 2&20 fee structure: "Management Fee: The Fund is charged a 2% management fee in respect of the Net Asset Value of the Class A Units. Profit Distributions: Class A Units share 20% of profits with the holder of the Founder Interests through distributions.", but some other units seem to be a bargain at 10% of profits. There's a couple Cayman subs involved, yet "The Cayman Directors do ...

Those TJ bananas are 19 cents *each*. Or about 25 Canadian cents each, or about $1/lb. We're the ones getting a deal (for once).

submitted 4, but wished it was 5 and will get #5 when I can.

Got first bout of covid before they opened up eligibility for my 4th one. I started my initial 3 shots pretty early (right place, right time), so I (correctly) suspected they required too long of a gap before shortening the timespan between 3rd and 4th, despite the delta variant drifting further and further away from what we were immunizing against :(

1 week for an 18 page (prelim) report. Pretty good.

When Ontario "accidentally" sent out a nuclear incident report to everyone's cell phone, they took 22 months to put together 10 pages (but probably more words): https://www.ontario.ca/page/investigati ... ry-12-2020

I liked this one finding:
EMO staff explained that character limitations within the Alert Ready system may impact the ability to issue alerts in a bilingual format. Wireless Intrusive alerts are limited to 600 characters and Broadcast Intrusive alerts are limited to 900 characters. Some of the current English nuclear templates contain in excess of 600 characters.

Not sure if they'll send a nastygram in the mail but likely something else will payout a dividend soon and restore balance in the universe.

I'm having a problem accessing TD WebBroker, wonder if anyone has had a similar issue or can suggest a fix. I think its a compatibility problem between WebBroker and the Safari browser on an older (2011) Mac computer. Problem does not happen with the FireFox browser, however I would like to keep using Safari for everything, if possible. The computer is a 2011 Mac Mini which is an older machine and no longer supported by Apple, but the computer and Safari are otherwise very reliable and run everything else properly for the last 12 years. Browser is Safari 12.1.2 from 2019. Running 2 Dell 23" LED monitors. I'm able to use the TD banking website from Safari no problem. Sent a query to their investor relations two weeks ago, along with a reminder, about something in their annual/quarterly reports that confused me and. Just radio silence. This really bothers me. Not even a BS reply about being unable to answer that kind of question.

I’ve only queried other public company’s IR email 3 times in the past and got a quick and mostly meaningful response each time.

I went with my gut and a bit of research and bout a 1/4 allocation of U.UN, the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust. When I read between the lines in the media, it seems to me that it's slowly dawning on some of our leaders that we can't leap ahead to a green energy future involving only wind, solar and hydro. We need another source of base electrical power. Nuclear is it. Russia is our main supplier of Uranium. I think there's a real possibility the war in Europe will expand, and the other main source of uranium, Kazakhstan, is close to Russia. That means both sources could be quickly cut off. I also noticed that u.un had a bit of a break out recently. Now that I did buy, I'm certain the price will go down. Kazakhstan is the biggest producer by...

Re: Electric Cars

Except in Europe where many cars shut off during pauses and automatically restart the engine. It's actually surprising how many cars here do that. When I'm sitting at the stop light on my bike every day, and the light turns green, I hear quite a few cars start up that had shut off at the red light. I can't imagine over the life of a vehicle how hard that must be on the starters. Maybe they install heavy duty starters or something? ltr Had a Fiat 500 micro-hybrid for ~2 weeks in Europe with the start/stop. Not a bad vehicle, does 140km/h on the autoroutes (unless you're going uphill...). It had a 3.6kW "belt-starter-generator" on the accessory belt. It uses that to start the engine during start/stop conditions. These are easy star...

Today I learned that you can add someone as a "Foe" here, and that's the ignore list. What is CMF? As I understand it, some years ago, a group of Canadian finance blogs (four pillars, million dollar journey, some others?) decided to start a forum. Probably a run against redflagdeals. Looks like CMF was sold to VerticalScope (a consolidator of online forums) some time ago. They usually buy a community, get really restrictive with things (any kind of promotion that isn't a paid ad), and let it whither away. Sadly, VS has acquired a lot of car fo...

Re: Laurentian Bank (Symbol-LB)

Just thinking of the sum of the parts and what could be separated and its effects: 1. Given that an (unbeknownst to me) crown asset of LB is it's US lender, Northpoint, how does that play into capital ratios? If LB sold off Northpoint to some US buyer or Canadian non-bank acquirer, does that make LB's "low" capital ratio easier to swallow by another Canadian bank from that point of view? Or do these capital ratios just apply to the Canadian operations and foreign subs make no difference? Overall, it sounds like LB wouldn't sell this off to someone without a deal for someone else to buy itself/the parent. 2. LB owns, with a book value of CAD$67m, an asset manager based in Budapest Hungary called "NCF International Holding Kft&...

CBSA passport checks off the jetbridge returning to Canada. Frequency? Delays? Targeted/Random?

Hi all, Returned from a trip to Paris and CBSA had 2 officers checking every deplaning passenger on a flight of ~448 passengers + crew at the jetbridge. A bit more than the usual "just walk by and show your passport" that I've been through before, but this time they spent some seconds checking each one (and even sniffed my passport???). They were also checking our neighbouring flight from London-Heathrow, which suggests to me it was random check rather than targeted. Has anyone else experienced this to a degree that delayed the offboarding of the aircraft and lead to long-ish deplaning delays? Our flight was already delayed by several hours so I was really upset by this. And I've gone through the process for Nexus, and my partner ...
