Re: Robo-advisors

Robo-advisers find popularity where few thought they would After discovering that he was paying more than $20,000 a year in fees, Bruce Pinn, a 57-year-old executive from Toronto, decided to make a drastic move and fire his investment adviser of 18 years. At the end of the article there is graphic ...

Re: Gifting to Grandchildren

Note that financial institutions are reluctant or will refuse deposits to a TFSA except by the person whose TFSA it is. That is why I have given money to each of my children so that they could make the deposits to their TFSAs.

Re: Investment income in a CCPC

I saw an interview with the Conservative Party's 'Liar in Chief' Pierre Poilievre on this subject. Obvious during the last election he had already invented 'alternative truths' before Trump and his crowd in the US had even thought of it. Perhaps those who are vehemently opposed to the tax proposal i...

Taxing Employee Discounts

Some genius bureaucrat at CRA decided it would be a good idea to tax employee discounts e.g. that free hamburger to a minimum wage worker or discounts on clothing for retail workers - already one of the lowest paid job categories. And don't forget the nightmare of policing and tracking stuff like th...

Re: How far are you from retirement?

Hamor - you have my sympathies. I live in the GTA and when I take the subway occasionally on weekdays I am amazed at how crowded it is at all times of the day. I would guess that commuting is a killer for most people. I was fortunate in that my longest commutes were a suburban bus ride when I worke...

Along with brad911 I will probably sell all of my AltaGas (ALA-T) position after owning it for nearly 2 years. I have a capital loss. According to my Quicken record accounting for dividends I have a small (very) gain.

Beneficiary for a deferred pension

I have been asked this question by a friend. What I know. She has a deferred pension from a former employer. She is not yet 65, still works - no pension where she is currently. She is divorced, single and does not have a spouse. She wants to know if it is better to designate a beneficiary who would ...

Certainly semantics is at play here. Looking at my last two tax returns line 121 Int. etc/line 150 total income the average is 15%. And my LIF payment comes from all FI and my RRIF payment partially so.

Transferred everything out of Tangerine at end of promotion last week of June. Was offered 1.6% as retention ( 6 figure account) which I refused. No new offer so the money is now redeployed elsewhere. After many years with ING I am heartily fed up with this crowd and their games.

Finally gave the people at Tangerine (the former ING) the old heavo when they would not extend my current offer - they offered me 1.6% and were unwilling to budge so the funds are in transit. EQ bank is offering 2.3% and I have an offer from PCF for 2.5%.
