Re: Blackrock whitepaper on spending in retirement
With the current rise in the stock market we need to increase our travel budget to keep up with VPW. When I see an old person driving a ridiculously expensive sports car my first thought is “oops that person didn’t spend enough in their early retirement and now they were forced to blow it in their later years” or “oops that person kept working too long they should have retired sooner so they would have had more years to spend their money” You really do not need to 'keep up' with VPW. It really just gives you an ongoing spending plan (year to year or month to month you name it) There really is nothing to prevent you saving some or giving it away. For a senior in an expensive car see my post in Humour (2024) on Wednesday. https://www.financi...

Re: Humour (2024)
A Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-75, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw the State-Trooper behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speedin...

Boeing
This is an opinion piece which appeared in yesterday's G & M. It is behind the paywall. Boeing’s woes are a perfect example of how nickel-and-diming ends up crushing a company It is posted here as it applies to Financial News. However as the author also notes. To be sure, because of the scrutiny on Boeing, every incident is capturing media attention. It’s important to note that every day thousands of Boeing aircraft around the world complete their journeys without incident. He also says that Investors should be bringing more pressure to bear on the company to pay attention to the small things at the root of its big problems I remember reading that the culture of Boeing changed with their merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997 going from ...

Re: BMO Investorline
BMOIL lists 3 HISAs in $C all currently paying 4.75%. They are BMT104 (BMO), BMT109 (BMMC) , BMT114 (Trust Co). Their list say they are CDIC eligible.
Does anyone know if these would be considered separate entities for CDIC coverage?

DUCA
As a long time member of the DUCA credit union (35+ years) which used to be a low key credit union, this report concerns me.
From today's G & M, behind the paywall.
Lead lender to Sam Mizrahi and Edward Rogers’ condo project alleges loan default, requests court-appointed receiver
In recent years DUCA has actively solicited deposits (see the mention of it in the thread in FWF on High Interest Savings and on RFD) which has involved a lot of people who had never previously heard of it becoming members to take advantage of high interest rates.
I would be interested to hear an opinion from someone more knowledgeable than I if this loan could imperil DUCA's existence.

Consolidation of TFSA
I am in the process of moving my TFSA towards a single balanced ETF, in this case VBAL.
Having sold some equity and mutual funds I want to BUY about 1500 to 2000 shares of VBAL.
Any advice on how to do this without disturbing the day's trading - presumably some kind of limit order.?

Re: Clippings 2024
EV’s are certainly getting a “bumpy” reception these days. Keep in mind the source though. WSJ will generally be anti Biden given their ownership. Is there any doubt that eventually EV’s will replace ICE’s? I would say not. It’s only the timing and implementation that’s debateable. Agreed. At least with the media reporting on the debacle with the TESLAs in Chicago, there was another article on how NORWAY with the largest % of electric vehicles of any nation and cold winter temperatures handles their ownership. They even use electric vehicles up in Lapland. From what I read most Norwegians live in house and have home chargers. They also preheat their batteries before their average 1/2 hour commute to work. Living in Montreal when I first ca...

Re: Best online broker for RESP
I considered opening an RESP account for my eldest grand daughter when she was born (she will turn 10 next week). I now have 3 grand daughters. I decided I would give my son the money and let him open it and administer it as he is financially literate. He has his account at TDDI and is generally satisfied with it. He has had to occasionally talk to an agent to sort out the odd issue. I send him the occasional item that I see on the FWF thread. I don't ask details but he has volunteered that my eldest grand has reached the $50K limit. He says that the account is all invested in VGRO. PS. QTrade seems like a pretty good bet. They consistently rank No. 1 in Carrick's G&M annual review. If I did'nt have well established accounts at BMOIL in...

An interesting list from Rolling Stone. The 250 Greatest Guitarists.
I like classical guitar, bossa nova etc but being partial to Clapton, Van Halen, Mark Knopfler and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others, obviously I am revealing my age and a preference for rock.

Adapted from a book by Graham Greene, I just watched this movie
The Quiet American (2002)
Available on Amazon Prime
Set in Vietnam in the period while the French were still there and the Americans were getting involved with the OSS (CIA) prior to their full involvement in the Vietnam war it paints a picture of Saigon, today Ho Chi Minh City.

Re: VISA - Resolving Fraudulent charges
Last year approaching Christmas I got a call from HT Visa about suspicious charges on my card. Confirming that I had not made them they said they would investigate, cancelled the card and made provision to issue a new one. I had used it to purchase small Christmas gifts online for a relative. I could tell from one item that had been reversed after accepting the order which retailer where it was probably hacked. After trying it out at a small variety store the perpetrator had used it to buy gasoline at a local station. Despite providing this information the bank was not interested but just carried out their normal procedures in such cases i.e card cancellation and issue of a new card. Obviously the banking industry considers this a cost of d...

Thanks to Norbert for pointing out issues with these strategies. Tim Cestnick did allude to legal issues.
My summary was an attempt to provide a summary for Poedin.
My RRIF contract at BMOIL does name my spouse as successor annuitant and my children as beneficiaries. (NOT IRREVOCABLE)
However it also contains the following clause
"If I have designated both a successor annuitant below and a beneficiary(ies) above, and both are alive at my death, then the designation of successor annuitant takes precedence."

Re: Estate Planning
Option 1 naming your spouse as the successor annuitant can allow you to control your RRIF assets after you’re gone. For example, you can ensure that your surviving spouse receives an income from the RRIF but that your children will receive the balance of the RRIF when your spouse dies (good in a second marriage situation, for example). How? By naming your spouse as the successor annuitant and your children as irrevocable beneficiaries of your RRIF Option 2 Wilma and Betty are sisters, both single. They turned 72 last year, and each has a RRIF. Let’s assume they can earn 5 per cent annually on their investments and have a marginal tax rate of 30 per cent. Let’s also assume they both live to age 90 and will face tax in their year of death at...
