Re: Beneficiary for a deferred pension

Thank you AR and OGG for your replies. I have passed on the info to my friend.
This sort of informed help is what I like about FWF and why I am still a member.

Beneficiary for a deferred pension

I have been asked this question by a friend. What I know. She has a deferred pension from a former employer. She is not yet 65, still works - no pension where she is currently. She is divorced, single and does not have a spouse. She wants to know if it is better to designate a beneficiary who would ...

I have made 'in kind' withdrawals from my RRIF to a non registered account in the past. The withdrawal security price becomes your ACB in your non registered account.

Re: Investment changes in retirement

Certainly semantics is at play here. Looking at my last two tax returns line 121 Int. etc/line 150 total income the average is 15%. And my LIF payment comes from all FI and my RRIF payment partially so.

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2017)

Transferred everything out of Tangerine at end of promotion last week of June. Was offered 1.6% as retention ( 6 figure account) which I refused. No new offer so the money is now redeployed elsewhere. After many years with ING I am heartily fed up with this crowd and their games.

Retirement Homes

On the day that Elizabeth Wettlaufer was sentenced to life for serial killings of elderly patients, here is a truly horror story about a Malaysian owned retirement village company in Australia. Bleed them dry until they die I am resolved that they will carry me into the undertaker before I will ever...

Finally gave the people at Tangerine (the former ING) the old heavo when they would not extend my current offer - they offered me 1.6% and were unwilling to budge so the funds are in transit. EQ bank is offering 2.3% and I have an offer from PCF for 2.5%.

Re: What would you tell someone who wants to get started investing?

My post re investing for my minor grand daughters seemed to have elicited an avalanche of posts. Meanwhile I have been on a seniors hike all day. :)
It has certainly given me much to consider and think about and I thank everyone who contributed to the discussion.

Re: What would you tell someone who wants to get started investing?

For our grandkids, my wife started DRIP's for both of them (one bank stock each). I am interested in the mechanics of how to set this up. Can you buy the stock in their name somehow? Hopefully a forum member might have some insight about this. I am well into my 70s. I have two grandchildren and thr...

CPP Rules - Fred Vettese article

An interesting article by Frederick Vettese of Morneau Shepell about the CPP. Learn how the federal civil servants who designed the government pension plan made sure they feathered their own nests. Politicians have a well deserved reputation of looking after themselves. It seems their servants are n...

It's a bit of a nuisance, though, to remember to use them on occasion in order to keep them active. Is it really necessary to use them to keep them active? Re: Paying 2016 Tax by Cheque

Call CRA and ask for a remittance voucher; This happened with a friend of mine much to the consternation of the bank teller because the form they sent her apparently was for a payment of GST. When she texted me I told her to tell them the payment was for 2016 taxes not 2017 installments. It was a s...

I have both a RRIF and LIF. I make one annual withdrawal from each, the regulated minimum so there is no witholding tax. I pay my taxes by quarterly installments. These were mid year but are now in October. Looking at my Quicken records, for the RRIF I have sold securities sometimes ahead of time ho...

I got the 2.5% offer. Seems just as random as Tangerine's promotions. I have had a zero balance in my Interest Plus account for over 20 months.

Re: I don't want a refund, the goal should be having taxes owing

Although I agree with the sentiment expressed by PI, the approach of SQRT is what I do. Installments give you the option of 3 approaches. The one year I decided not to go with the option of paying what is asked and instead estimated an amount and paid it I was charged interest. So from then on I pay...

Fair enough Norbert and indeed a major part of my income flow is from 4 BMO ETFs.
But my point is why even report it at all if is going to be incorrect.
