Re: Record Keeping Practices: Scanned/Digital?

Another option is a scanning app on your phone such as Office Lens. The pictures it takes don't take up much space.

Re: RBC Direct Investing (formerly Action Direct) experience

Saturday morning I received an email from RBCDI saying I had a tax form ready. But when I tried to select 2023 tax forms yesterday and today I got "We are unable to complete your request at this time. Please try again." When I click on OK, it logs me off with some message about temporary problems.

Anyone else have this problem?

Good to see that the guides we used in the 80's and early 90's are still around.

Canadian Rockies Trail Guide by Brian Patton and Bart Robinson

Scrambles In The Canadian Rockies by Alan Kane

Kananaskis Country Trail Guide by Gillean Daffern. There are multiple volumes covering different parts of K-Country.

Cut Your Losses and Let Profits Run? “Cut your losses” is not a good strategy, as it underperformed the benchmark buy-and-hold portfolio. As Baur and Dimpfl noted, “Losing stocks rarely continue to fall, which is not surprising in a world where stock markets rise and economies grow on average. In other words, if a rising tide lifts all boats, a cut-your-losses strategy cannot work.” The upside equivalent, “cut your profits,” also clearly underperformed, leading to much larger losses relative to the benchmark than the cut-your-losses strategy. This strategy fails because positive momentum is stronger than negative momentum. Investors are best served by adhering to their investment strategy and rebalancing as required (while engaging in tax-...

I'm pretty sure my 2023 T5 for the TDB8* HISAs was there a few weeks ago. But it's gone now. The 2022 T5 is there though.

But all is not lost. The 2023 T5 came by snail mail yesterday. And the numbers match what I copied into my spreadsheet.

No. It insists on Cobalt. But, these days, I guess Cobalt is more common than COBOL.

Who knows. Maybe it's some 40-year-old COBAL batch program.

Interesting that my Android speech recognition doesn't seem to recognize COBAL.

Re: TD Direct Investing (was Waterhouse) Service

I assume the T5008 is changing for some people. And they can't just issue new forms to those whose values have changed.

IB has done the same thing for me for the past few years. They issue a new T5. But the values are the same.

Alberta Budget 2024: Province to introduce $200 annual electric vehicle tax

Calgary Herald wrote:In Alberta’s 2024 budget unveiled Thursday, the province says the new tax will be applied when electric car owners register their vehicle and will be in addition to the current registration fee. The province says electric vehicles tend to be heavier and cause more destruction on highways and roads, while owners don’t pay a provincial fuel tax. The tax will not apply to hybrid vehicles, the budget says.
To start in 2025.

Cheap Chinese EVs may head to Canada before U.S.
Driving.CA wrote:As ominous as the sirens may sound, it’s possible — though perhaps not probable — that the U.S. is not currently in BYD’s sights. Oh, the U.S. auto market, the second-largest after China itself, is no doubt very attractive. On the other hand, its defences — most specifically those aimed specifically at China — are robust. Perhaps more importantly, even in America’s fractured political polemic, one of the few things Democrats and Republicans agree on is an “ABC” policy — Anybody But China.

...

What I do know, however, is that the United States has built a formidable moat around its auto industry. We have not.

Bought GM (General Motors) for my US large-cap screen to replace DFS (Discover Financial Services). DFS has received an offer from Capital One Financial.

Primary reason I picked GM was 18% shareholder yield (current dividend + 1 year buyback) 3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago was when my last monthly subscription to P123 expired.

I'll be holding GM until May/24 and then will reevaluate.
