Re: What did you Buy? What might you buy? (2020)
Hi, I noticed a few comments on HTGC. I don't look at fundamentals, however my charts show EPS and dividends payed. The dividend pay-out exceeds the EPS so I don't understand how the dividend is sustainable. The dividend looked to be fairly steady up until mid 2018; since then it has been volatile. I would think a cut would cause the price to drop. I'm always suspicious of a high dividend. I took a look at their financials and I will take a pass. You need to do what is right for you. I value any opinion from FWF but.... Thegipper, based on what you write (ex. My dilemma thread), you don't need to be piddling around with BDCs, so my advice would be don't. Deaddog, I knew what you were doing several years ago (swing / momentum trading, right?...

Re: My Dilemma [ stock holdings]
Hi,
Interesting discussion.
No issue with preservation of capital, although my mantra would be preservation of income since I’m an income investor. I have sold 18 securities since January mainly for that reason.
I wasn’t referring to Canada specifically. Less than 10% of my net worth is invested there. Alberta, well.. it is what it is and not representative of the ROC. They are receiving the double punch of COVID and a moribund energy industry.
I’m pretty sure Thegipper is largely invested in the US.

Re: My Dilemma [ stock holdings]
Hi, Selling for no other reason than you think the market might tank again seems like market timing to me. Also, I think there are some ideas that need unpacking from OP's post: I am convinced we are in the midst of a real depression. Government debt and deficits are at extraordinary levels. Unemployment is at 1930s levels. Debt levels of most corporations are very high and getting higher. Small business is on life support , trade wars are emerging, social unrest and violence seems to be on the rise, individual debt levels are at record levels. 1. We aren't in a depression, or at least it's too early to tell. Also, the Fed after the harsh lessons of the sub-prime mortgage mess, have acted decisively and will again which is not what happened...

Re: How to invest USD sitting in a US Bank account?
Hi,
I thought about that and had written a few lines, but then I thought maybe the tax problem was uppermost in your mind.
Maybe what you could do is tell us what you can do within your current bank ecosystem:
1. Buy mutual funds
2. Buy ETFs
3. Stocks, preferred shares??
4. Worth owning time deposits?
As far as diversification goes, if the US is the same as Canada, you don't need to do anything special to buy a mutual fund. As for how to diversify, you'll get a different answer from everyone who regularly posts on this forum.

Glad to hear you invested in HTGC. I'm sure the road will be bumpy but the dividend is sustainable based on past performance and good earnings Q2.
I'm also gratified that I (we) beat Seeking Alpha to the punch:
Hercules Capital: An 11.7% Yield With Increasing Net Asset Value

Re: How to invest USD sitting in a US Bank account?
Hi,
Maybe I'm qualified to answer this question since I'm a long term non-resident Canadian.
Of course the most logical thing to do is to contact your US bank and your Canadian bank if you intend to invest in Canada. If you need a guess...
I think you need to do two things:
1. Make sure both tax authorities know you tax status: resident / non-resident
2. There is a tax agreement between the US and Canada, so your tax situation can probably be resolved by completing a W-8BEN

Thanks for the idea. I've been reading up on it a bit just now. It is very similar in what it does, but with a more diverse portfolio. Looks interesting and I'll put it on watch.

Hi, Not the main topic of this thread, but I think some of us need to get up to speed on our vaccines. 1. Astrazeneca, Pfizer, and JNJ are the front runners in development meaning stage 3 trials (on humans) Astra says it will release the first vaccine in September, but I believe a realistic date for worldwide distribution would be January to March 2021. 2. There are several reasons why a vaccine would be effective because of differences in the disease. 9 reasons you can be optimistic that a vaccine for COVID 19 will be widely available 3. Most importantly, this one of the most intense campaigns to develop a vaccine in history . Start Googling. I can assure you all as Canadians, Americans, or Europeans that you will have access to a viable v...

Hi, Leaving aside BCE which I added to recently, I found small company I can be excited about. It's a business development corporation or more commonly know as a BDC. BDCs were initiated in the 1980s when legislation was passed to help the private sector kickstart small unlisted business. It's called Hercules Capital (HTGC). It's been around since 2005. The July 30 report was decent: HERCULES CAPTITAL SECOND QUARTER 2020 INVESTOR PRESENTATION Looking at the numbers, for Hercules it is like COVID never happened. The four things I like about the company are: 1. It funds mainly tech businesses in 5 specific areas: a. Life Sciences b. Technology c. Software as a Service (SaaS) d. Renewables and Sustainable e. Special situations *It seems like a...

Hi,
It doesn't interest me personally as I'm sure it won't be paying a dividend. However, when the IPO hits it might be dirt cheap relative to what it will be in a few years. A contrarian play perhaps???

Re: Buying gold coins
Hi, I think buying gold (or other) coins can be a good idea. I've owned several gold coins on and off over the years, sometimes for myself, and sometimes as gifts. When I go to Winnipeg, the Royal Canadian Mint is a must stop place. I usually buy the most recent set of Canadian currency and have a good look at gold coins while there. There are probably two reasons to own them: 1. The ultimate diversification. While I think the demise of the entire financial system is unlikely, still having, say, 30 1 oz Maple Leafs would not be a bad idea. ETFs that don't actually have the gold could be worthless. That said, MNT-T (Royal Canadian mint ETN) does store your gold for you, so it is an alternative to storing it yourself. MNT-T 2. Quick access st...

Hi,
I added to my BCE shares yesterday. Basically, I had decided to dump POW, but not where to reinvest. A couple of days ago, I began thinking why not BCE at least for now? Steady company, rising dividends, generous dividend. I could see it hitting $60 + coming out of COVID.
It is now my largest Canadian holding, just smidge above ENB.

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2020)
I sold POW. In spite of the reorganization, which should have been ground '0' for the company, it has given up another 20% in share value, and probably not because of COVID. It's still a deeply complicated company and frankly I don't understand it, and don't understand why it so complicated. Therefore, like 'intelligent investor' (I know, I flatter myself too much), if I don't understand it, I shouldn't be in it. Anyway, the tale is in the tape. The August 7 report was pretty good, but big picture, it's been wuff wuffling around $30 for 10 years so I'll say goodbye and not look back.
The proceeds were reinvested to BCE.

I was an owner by August 2013 albeit briefly. There was a major house cleaning at Wells Fargo and the new CEO is highly regarded. I do recall that Wells Fargo might have been the strongest large US bank coming out of the financial crisis.

Re: Dividend and distribution hikes (2020)
While I remain an income investor, and a dividend is always a positive return, I've come to think that a variable dividend policy isn't the bugbear I once thought it was. I have a great deal of money invested in firms (CEFs) that do not pay the same or ever rising dividends, but dividends based on performance which are adjusted up or down annually.
That said, I would be very unlikely to invest in metals or metal producing companies, as the chances for disappointment and lost income (with a few exceptions) are almost guaranteed.

Re: Dividend and distribution cuts (2020)
Hi, BP Ouch! Not an owner, but when BP cuts they don't mess around. Dominion Energy (D) plans cut the dividend. Mainly, the company will "re-base" its dividend from an annualized rate of $3.76 per share to $2.50, effective in Q4. The dividend cut follows a reduction in projected 2020 earnings per share guidance from $4.25 to $4.60 to a new range of $3.37 to $3.63. ... Dominion does plan to buy back $3 billion in stock.2020/07/07 * *Cancellation of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline has been cancelled and sale of assets may be the reasons. I am long D and still scratching my head over this one. Three options: 1. Hold (shut my eyes and hope the buy back makes me whole) 2. Collect the Q3 dividend and sell 3. Sell now and move on Any votes o...

Good advice and more importantly, good links.
Just curious the dude. What do you consider to be a tsx loser? Example please!
FYI:
QQQ (Invesco QQQ) inception was just over 21 years ago. With dividends reinvested it has averaged 8.64% annually and only slightly less without dividends since it doesn’t fundamentally pay any. Looking at the chart, it would have taken a lot of patience to own it through its first 10 years.
