Do investors own 23.7% of Ontario homes at the end of 2023, or did investors buy 23.7% of Ontario homes that sold during 2023? Is that number "stock" or "flow"? It makes a difference.
In 2011, multiple-property owners accounted for 15.3 per cent of home purchases, but by 2022 their share of the market reached 25.2 per cent of all homes sold in the province

Re: Nurse Practitioners / Physician Assistants
Of course it is about money. Who wants to work for free? My philosophy is that I generally give enough refills until I want or need to assess you again. When I get a fax request for a refill, I have to go through an unpaid dance of looking through your chart seeing how reasonable/terrible it is to not assess you and then decide if I send a small batch or ask you to come back. It is all unpaid work that adds to the daily workload. I had an interesting experience recently. I saw my doc (a specialist) in January. She had changed my medication in when I saw her in November and thought it was improving my condition when I saw her in January. Therefore she gave me a new prescription with a dose increase and scheduled an appointment in mid April....

Well, since nobody better informed than me wants to comment, I'd say you are correct.
That said, if conditions are such that CDIC has to step in there will be a lot of turmoil, inflation or whatever. I don't worry about CDIC limits simply because if the SHTF, either it is a single entity that won't affect me that much or it's general and won't matter that much since the economic hardships will affect the entire economy/markets.

Re: What and why did you sell? What might you sell? (2024)
I'm a 'hands off' kind of investor. Like Mr. Buffett, I like 'buy & forget'. Today, for some reason I looked at my RUS-T. The price has doubled since I bought it (god knows when) and the dividend was in the 3.5% range. Since I bought it for the yield, I asked myself the old question "would you buy it today if you you didn't already own it"? The answer "not a chance". Trying to convince myself to sell, take the CG hit, and replace with V/X/Z/EQT since my intention is to go to a 'cash wedge' plus equity AA anyway. Oh, well, tax tail wags dog,or not, we'll see.

I love some of this possibly OT stuff. I thought I was old since my first computer was a 155 (replaced soon after I started with a 158). I spent many late nights/early mornings with it testing OS/Hasp mods, Sysgens and other fun stuff.

Can't be bothered to consolidate. The RRIF, NReg-1 and NReg-2 are within 15% of each other and the bulk of my investments. TFSA is a small %age of total. Back of envelope says 10.5%.
According to RBCDI:
TSFA: 14.06%
NReg-1: 11.65?
According to BMOIL
NReg-2 9.94%
RRIF
gain + withdrawal ~10%

There was only one RRIF. The balance was correct assuming they had combined them. AFAIK there was nothing about a minimum withdrawal on any statement.

Maybe this wasn't smart.
My wife turned 71 in 2022. She had a RRSP with RBC and a spousal RRSP with RBCDI. The latter was ~5 X the value of the former. Anyway we tried (and I thought succeeded) in combining them in an RRIF with RBCDI. The RRIF account shows the combined balance correctly. She asked them to make the minimum withdrawal on Dec. 15 of each year (setup option). On Dec. 15 she got a deposit in her chequing account of ~1/6th of my calculation of the minimum withdrawal Seems to me they miscalculated the minimum.
Anyway we waited and watched. Nothing more happened. Is this going to give us a problem with CRA?

OK, for the equities portion of my portfolio I'm about40% individual stocks and 60% ETFs. I have no AA ETFs.
All of my individual stocks are Cdn dividend payers that I have held for many years. I haven't added to them as all new buys (last several years) are VUN, XIU and (now) VEQT.

You pay the balance with cash earned elsewhere. When was the last time the federal government redeemed a bond by other means than borrowing more? Certainly not since 2015.longinvest wrote: ↑27 Nov 2023 21:31
Kumquat, do you have any evidence of the federal government defaulting on any of its bonds? Each bond has coupon dates and a maturity date.
I always have a balance on my credit card, yet I pay no interest because I fully pay each statement balance in full on the due date. It appears that our government does also respect the due date on its bonds.

By your reckoning (and I agree), your pension is an income stream that will stop with your death(s). It has no value beyond that. So, enjoy it and don't fret about it, it doesn't matter.formerpatriot wrote: ↑01 Jul 2023 16:00
If wife and I both die in 10 years, the pension is gone. Nothing left for the kids.
With $1,825,000 and a 4% withdrawal rate, if wife and I both die in 10 years, there will probably be a lot left for the kids.
Therefore, I don't think my pension is worth $1,825,000.

Probably a good idea on my part since I was likely wrong. Thanks again and I hope the next transition is easy and peaceful.

ACB errors from distributions in non reg for VBAL aren't going to have a big enough tax error to be worth losing sleep over. There are better things to do.
While I have been following this thread, I ask myself why. I agree withe Shakes. My brokerage book value possible errors are in all probability minuscule. If it's out by even 1% I'd be surprised. IF CRA cares about that 1%, I'd be even more surprised. I'm just going to use the BV numbers and let the chips fall where they may. If CRA does care, I have around 7 digits in ETFs that won't likely be sold until I die. Since my executor is going to inherit them (s)he can deal with it. After all, it will be worth it to him/her.
