Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

For those who like to chase various online banks for the best GIC rates, there is a new 1-5 year GIC comparison chart at https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/gic-rates/ It covers a number of retail online banks, but not products/rates published by brokers/brokerages.

Re: WCS vs WTI?

You are missing the economics of producing gold. The actual price of the eventual commodity (gold) is only one part of the equation. Surely you know all this stuff if you are investing in stocks!!!! Surely you could try to be a little less condescending to all members especially new ones? (and can ...

Re: WCS vs WTI?

Why is there a difference between Canadian oil vs American? Is there such a differential between gold and other resources? Check the oil thread and many other sources of oil news for the past 5 years for your answer. There is no such thing as one kind of oil. There are multiple grades from light cr...

Re: New Rules for Commuted Values (Pensions, QC)

I think the time is gone for DB plans. Corporations don't like to have all that uncertainty on their books as much as anything AND there is no 'gold watch' loyalty anyway on either the employer's or employee's part. IOW, there is no point rewarding loyalty when none can realistically exist in this f...

Re: New Rules for Commuted Values (Pensions, QC)

Fair enough, but DB plans, at least in the private sector, are on their way out. Public plans will have to be reined in substantially someday too, to avoid 'figurative' bankruptcy of provincial and municipal governments....as has happened in the USA.

Re: Atco (Symbol-ACO.X) & Canadian Utilities (Symbol-CU.X)

But should future returns not be compared to the alternatives? In the last five years this has been a terrible investment. Over the last 10 to 15, pretty good. Your analysis seems to only look at the dividend sustainability?? Okay, but why just look at the past 5 years as the basis for a future for...

Re: New Rules for Commuted Values (Pensions, QC)

You misread, or missed, the first part of that sentence While new restrictions on commuted values will reduce the pressure, where I agree the pressure on DB pensions are reduced.... The logic of the second part is that if rules have to intervene for DB plan survivability, then WTF are we (corporate ...

Re: New Rules for Commuted Values (Pensions, QC)

Employers offering DB pensions have been under siege obviously with the recent years of low interest rates. Kind of makes future pension/funding obligations a wild card with unpredictable boundaries. While new restrictions on commuted values will reduce the pressure, it seems to me this is just anot...

Re: Vanguard Mutual Funds in Canada

Maybe they will if they can get enough traction on their index MF fund offerings through advisors first. They just don't have a distribution channel of their own to market their index MF products. I'm confused, does Vanguard have index MF products in Canada, or did you mean these actively managed M...

Re: Vanguard Mutual Funds in Canada

That is disappointing. Maybe if they are popular enough, they will come out with a D-class later. I'd like to see them offer F class to the discount brokerage industry. No reason they should not do so since the likes of Mawer don't pay trailer fees either. Maybe they will if they can get enough tra...

Re: Dividend stocks in a rising interest rate scenario

The dividend yield, dividend growth trade is a crowded trade these days and the underlying fundamentals such as huge debt loads in a rising interest rate market don't look too encouraging to me. A purchaser might get a good dividend, but total return could be suspect going forward due to what I see...

Re: Are EFTs/wire transfers between banks safe/guaranteed in Canada?

I agree the Zag website is pretty wonky but have never failed to get a transfer after one full business day, i.e. if I initiate a transfer right now, it will be in my receiving account on Friday. Works for me. The only one I have seen slightly faster was PCF (no Simplii). P.S. I have wound down all ...

Re: Are EFTs/wire transfers between banks safe/guaranteed in Canada?

One of the downsides that come with online banks is lack of a full suite of services. You get what you pay for, or in this case, what you don't get for the privilege of higher returns on deposits. Wire transfers will always cost money due to the manual intervention involved. Don't whine about it. P....

Guess that will drive up the demand (and prices) on used Porsches, Jags, etc. within BC. That is what I will now be looking to do to stay under the $125k threshold.

JAG, you don't seem to accept how easy it is to launder dirty money in housing, casinos, etc. Do some reading of your own. Maybe even the book Panama Papers as I have mentioned at least a few times. BC socialists just introduced their budget with a number of housing items. One of them will result (i...

Do any of the big bank brokers (or any of the big banks for that matter) support 2 factor authentication? IB does. BMO IL does though I believe it is a fairly recent (last few years) addition. Is a a verification code to a device or when travelling and no access to verification codes, challenge que...

There is a tradeoff sometimes when one appli...

Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

It is my experience at least a few of the big 5 banks do not allow a Bill Payee to be another FI's bank account. Only Bill Payee to things like brokerage accounts. Have to use other institutions like Tangerine, Simplii, Oaken, etc. for push/pull between bank accounts. I really do not know why the bi...
