Re: TFSA Contribution 2018

Remember what happened with Cap Gains exemptions and tax rate changes over the decades? It will happen eventually with TFSAs. Naive to think otherwise.

CIBC Online

Anyone having trouble accessing account information the past 2 weeks or so? I only have a CC with them the past few years but for the past ~2 weeks, there has been an online 'meltdown' in that no CC data is available. No balance data, no transaction data and no access to e-statements. Their secure o...

I think I've mentioned this before....but I believe the lifetime contribution cap will be circa $100k, a short 5 years from now or so.

Re: Saving for down payment in roughly 5 years

Not sure how well REITs would correlate to house prices. The residential rental REITs don't necessarily correlate to house prices but I suspect they are the most likely bet, e.g. CAR.UN or BEI.UN depending on location. Bottom line: There is no way to seek moderate return on capital without having ri...

I guess my question would be, does owning KEY provide greater diversification if I already own ENB,TRP, PPL, ALA, ENF? Or am I just overweighting the same stressed sector.
In my opinion, ALA and PPL already do some of the same thing. I wouldn't own all 3.

Revisiting this thread, it is amazing to see how far these midstream entities have fallen. I know I own quite a lot of energy infrastructure, probably too much, but I find myself sniffing around in this space for possible bargains. Those peak valuations were built on growth momentum. When the momen...

Re: searching for ETF's

I believe you need to spend some time reading finiki on, if nothing else, portfolio design. Why do you have more than about 4-6 ETFs (or 4 TD e-series) in the first place? The concept of index investing is to buy whole markets in generally as few investments as possible. You can invest in the world ...

Re: Housing Bust 2017

IMO, housing use should be limited to shelter, not speculative investment. We would all be better off as a society. And who, pray tell, would provide rental units? The benevolent state, who knows best? Indeed. There have been quite a few places without "speculative investment". And those states did...

A RRSP has to be converted to an RRIF, converted into an annuity, or withdrawn as a lump sum.... in the year in which someone turns 71 years of age.

Not sure you can compare a Global Equity Fund with an ETF mix that contains bonds, i.e. XBB. The Mawer Global Equity Fund SHOULD be more volatile and SHOULD have outperformed over that 2 year period.

We just received (a few months ago) a capital loss carryback cheque for my mother's estate (from the T3 testamentary trust back to the final T1 return). I don't think CRA expects anyone to have direct deposit capability into an estate account.

SU is about to enter a larger production phase, and lower capex spending phase, plus they stand to gain from both oil price AND lower differentials in event of Line 3 replacement and/or Keystone XL and/or TransMountain expansion. One of those pipelines is going to go....hopefully. Only a lower globa...

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

I believe Park was using an extreme example just to put costs into perspective. I can't imagine anyone having 100% churn, except traders and they don't have $10 trades, i.e. they'd be at IB or similar.

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

Okay, missed the specifics of that post. As others have said (I think), that is an extreme case. My rule of thumb would be to keep costs below 0.1%.

Re: How Many Stocks In A Portfolio?

If the objective is to calculate cost, then yes, I suppose, but bonds have a commission cost too....while mutual funds normally don't. I bought 2 bonds in my RRSP this year @ $24.99 each. If the objective is churn/turnover, then the counter probably should count each transaction. OTOH, specific accu...
