Re: What did you Buy? What might you buy? (2017)

I've owned it for a long time from the low teens. It's a reliable income stock in the energy space that isn't tied to the commodity price. Their business used to be more about wholesale and delivery whereas the acquisitions have broadly expanded its retail footprint through gas bars and convenience...

Re: Wills, notification of death and probate

If there were truly no assets in the estate, and if nothing was distributed to beneficiaries, and if the outstanding bill is against the deceased's assets alone, then likely no. That creditor is hooped. The Executor has nothing to pay the bill with. I would think it odd though that any deceased woul...

Re: Wills, notification of death and probate

Not that I can tell. The executor will still need to go through the process of cancelling things like OAS, CPP, DB pension, SIN, Driver's License, Health card, etc. Usually a funeral home Statement of Death is all that is required, and possibly in some cases, a notarized or certified true copy of th...

Re: T1135 Form

A professional may have to advise vis-a-vis the VDP process when it comes to failure to file T1135. The thing is that it appears that failure to file is not limited in time by statute. http://taxca.com/blog-2016-44/ It also appears CRA takes (or has taken) a hard line in this matter. http://www.cana...

Re: T1135 Form

Yeppers, I would like to know a professional's view as well. From my perspective, CRA wants to know about ex-Canada domiciled assets that generate, or are likely to, generate income that is reportable. I suppose, on that basis, one could have multiple personal use properties.

Re: T1135 Form

As I suggested, you can argue one of the apartments is personal use, but IMO, probably not both. However, if you use the more expensive one as personal use for 2017 (and beyond) and re-patriate your cash in 2017, the least expensive apartment puts you below the threshold anyway for 2018. FWIW, CRA d...

Tsk....tsk. They are soooo far out of date. US production has again recovered essentially to its prior peak of circa 9.6 million barrels per day.

Indeed, mutual funds are different because pricing is not known until close. Wait until the next day to do the buy (but shouldn't have to wait until settlement).

Re: T1135 Form

You originally said the apartments were 'not rented, mothballed'. That is different than an apartment that has off and on occupancy, furnished with connected utilities ready-for-use for your family. Which is it? I doubt you can assume both apartments are vacation properties being enjoyed from time t...

Re: Telephone scams

I never answer phone calls from numbers I don’t know. And especially 8xx numbers. And speaking of 8xx numbers, I do remember one time only where a legitimate company (with whom I did business with) trying to get hold of me via a 8xx number. After apparently weeks of trying, they sent me ...

Re: Sears Canada (Symbol-SCC)

I agree with P_I the Bay carries much of the same 'fashion' stuff the 'average' consumer would have bought from Sears. The Bay will benefit quite a bit from that. Example: That $40 Arrow dress shirt is still at The Bay. The Bay does not have to make a single change to capture that demographic. The c...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2017)

I don't own ALA, but i do note they haven't increased their dividend in 2017, so that alone precludes me from even considering buying in until they do so. If they did increase this year, it would be a reason to actually sell them, not buy them. It would be stupid for them to bleed even more cash on...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2017)

I suspect ALA is being punished mostly because it took a highly viable, high growth, smallish company focused on gas/midstream processing and niche power generation and convulsed it into something that will have a tumor the size of an elephant attached to its hip. IOW, ALA is completely changing the...

Re: Sears Canada (Symbol-SCC)

Many companies that have a successful business model get way too comfortable in their own skins and don't see the trains coming down the tracks. They get addicted to their revenue streams, i.e. if its material to their bottom lines, they will protect it rather than evolve with the times. There are n...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2017)

Agreed. I am down about 12?% from my own purchase price and I suspect we will see that recovered come April or May, and/or perhaps even see renewed growth when we get the first quarterly result post-acquisition. In the meantime, the dividend yield of over 7% is more than enough to wait it out. A dec...

As reported in the Sell thread, used the proceeds from selling REF.UN to increase my holdings of XEF to boost my International allocation. Europe and Asia seem to be out of their 'funk' with a positive 2017, so time to increase my exposure.

Jay, you seem to be becoming (or now are) a hardened 'deep value' investor. Am curious about your success rate in the last 2-5 years, i.e. gainers vs losers? I admit to fishing sometimes for 52 week lows on blue chips but that has mixed results as well.

i am guessing he does mean wire transfer, but i think the first thing that is required is the 8 digit routing number, i.e. 3 digit institution and 5 digit transit number. It is the materiality in aggregate that makes a difference. Where that fine line is, is a judgement call. Clearly CRA was planning on lowering the bar to an absurd level where administration would far outweigh any taxes generated.

I do get what you are saying Brian and you can beat the index with a 'high graded' index emulation. I accept that. So can many others with a smaller number of positions across a number of sectors while at the same time, avoiding small weightings that don't really move the needle. It's a matter of di...
