Re: Blackrock whitepaper on spending in retirement

Besides the 'usual' spending and headspace behind how much and such.... I think we will more and more find people earmarking funds for potential medical spending.

In our own family one member almost got a serious procedure done in the US. The wait times here were closing in on an active and serious problem with the clock ticking. In the end it came through. However, I've more or less mentally earmarked a 100k of our stash for some point in the future the govt/system/whatever lets us down. I think were all doing our own mental gymnastics on what's ok to spend on from $4 soups can prices to well $40k surgery .

Speaking of winning lottery tickets. As they always say 'base don a true story' movie Jerry and Marge go Large.

Indeed there was a glitch in the system in some situations it wasn't gambling it was favoring the mark I mean ticket buyers. Decent enough movie too. I hop to see what the next 19 years brings. Cheers

The British dough flow thing makes me wonder what might/could happen down the road here. Every so often they trot the placement of Ontario say at like 38th in wealth if it was a state. 40 year trend of declining per capita yada yada. Reason enough for some VTI to me.

Re: Any questions about CPP?

It took a bit of persistence but we got the account back up and running. We didn't have a need to go in very often and since last go around they have 2 factor security. It's also glitchy. Tossed mine out and you have to wait 24 hours to try again. My wife succeeded with mine today. In the dual between enjoying a nice sunny day and sitting at a computer somehow the gov't thing won. She bravely entered her info until the system tossed her out and banned her for 24 hours as well. Maybe latency thing, maybe they hate us, maybe server trouble in Nigeria not sure :) It wasn't even at some high grade security moment just mulling over which relative or pet to get your retrieval info on. Anyway I got my number and it's not changed much since our las...

Thanks. A friend is about a year older than me so chatted in the summer. He said it would just arrive and I've been 59 since the wise turkeys headed for safer places. We divide the various less than fun labour things around here and Mrs P is the one to dig into the Gov't sites, whew lucky me.

Re: Any questions about CPP?

I have the impression the government mails you a info package on your potential benefit amount and such at age 59. I'm 59 and have been for a few months. I'm starting to look at the mail box for more than pizza offers. Should I poke the beast or be patient?

I don't plan to taking the money right off I just want to know the offer and see it in writing :)

Did Passive Investing Break the Market?
Famed investor David Einhorn says passive investing has broken markets and it's forced him to change his investment style to stay in business. How has passive investing transformed markets, and what happens next?

In the interview with Bloomberg, Einhorn declares that passive investing has fundamentally broken markets. And that the changes wrought from passive investing have meant he’s had to change his method of value investing to stay in business.

Re: Decumulation? Really?

Inflation that runs a bit higher for longer just might help with the problem of too much money (?) I suspect that there's going to be a real shift in supply and demand for a number of jobs. Some professions just might decline and some trades might just make out like bandits. The shoes might be changing over the next couple decades which could affect how much we actually spend in retirement compared to the period when say the boomers were working for a living. Time will tell.

My wife did a 1000 piece Luncheon of the Boating Party a couple of winters ago and it's definitely got bigger mono colour patches than you recall the painting as being. I'll never see it in the same light again and it's a bit a shame for it. I'm sure there's worse like the double sided ones but I hope to never run across them. :)

Re: Wanna touch a gold bar, here's where

You get sort of airline style scanned in through rotating glass doors. The vault thing is right across from the ticket wicket. I'm sure they would issue a stern- hey you - if you got too frisky with it. The old palace across town has a treasury museum with more security than that. Some crowns and such but a large number of Paris made silver serving platters. They made a lot back in the day being importer of spice and all such. One of the best spots in town is the Gulbenkian museum. He was THE original oil guy or pretty close to it. Here's the fastest bio to find https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calouste_Gulbenkian Basically made a lot, had good taste, only collected the best versions of anything(coins, carpets, paintings, porcelain, etc etc. I...

Wanna touch a gold bar, here's where

We were recently in Lisbon. Lovely trip. One odd little fun thing is at the money museum. https://www.museudodinheiro.pt/en/money-museum They have a 12.6 kilo gold bar that you can touch and lift and rattle a little bit. A cheap thrill :) especially considering the museum is itself free. Cheers

Re: Retirement Countdown: Start of 2025

I've spent about a year easing out of my self-employed thing. Covid knocked the wind out of it and I spent about 18 months or so seeing off the various clients that survived it or the staff that stuck with them. My wife left a full time gig a couple years ago. So I've only really been away from feeling light work or work light since the spring. Spent over half the time from Easter to Thanksgiving away. I'd agree up thread that it's the transition stories that can reveal some of the more interesting and useful tips and tools. I don't have a magic answer to amount of % draw from rsp other than it has been a roller coaster the past few years. We will pay less tax if we draw some out before getting public pensions.
