Re: High interest rates for savings, GICs and MMFs (2018)

If it's for long term investment, all CDIC insured, all non- registered how much do people feel comfortable having at one financial institution and would there be a difference say between BNS and Oaken? BNS without trying too hard (two depostors) you can get to $1.2 million at Oaken with three depos...

Re: Portfolio Advice for Elderly Relative (Early 90s)

Which broker currently HISA pays 1.5%? I am not aware of any myself. I'm not aware of a broker either but he has three Financial Institutions to choose from per his post. Even at BNS you can get 1.65% for 90 days. TDDI has pretty low GIC rates if hes trying to consolidate at TDDI a short bond fund ...

Re: Portfolio Advice for Elderly Relative (Early 90s)

As I mentioned earlier, I'd split the FI into a few components, simply to provide flexibility. Bond ETFs can have bad periods too, even a short term bond ETF. Having at least some FI in a HISA is a critical component. Not that this needed confirming but this is pretty important to layer FI so you d...

What % of your portfolio is in the banks? I'm about 9% overall which is higher than i would like but would be facing some tax hits if I reduced too much. This includes MFC and SLF but for the most part it's all in 4 of the 5 Cdn banks For sectors I use a general rule of thumb over 10 % in any secto...

What I like about my 50/50 portfolio is that it transforms a correction (-10%) into a non-event (-5%), a bear market (-20%) into a correction (-10%), and a market crash into a simple bear market. :)

Re: Three Investing Mistakes to Avoid

Actually, measuring the losses in something as pedestrian as a family car downplays the significance to me. So far it has been ho-hum. If you think a Honda Accord is pedestrian you may be out of touch with the financial reality of 90% of Canadians. My guess is most would wish they could go out and ...

This should maybe go in the Financial Porn thread but on Jan 24 2018 I had 8 buys and 60 sells out of 113 stocks on my handy dandy dart board. Now Feb 8 I have 41 buys and 8 sells out of 113, two weeks sure took some fluff out of the market.

IIRC a good buy on a bank is about 8 times earnings at the moment BMO is 12 X about $8 earnings which puts it about $96 with some apoptotic multiple contraction and earnings slash of about 50% that puts it about $32, scary thought.

Just for the record, what does an Accord go for these days? IIRC, the previous measure was Honda Civics, but I suppose we have to account for inflation... 2010 Civics were $25,000 Accords were $30,000 Pilots were $50,000 You can only lose a maximum of 8 Honda Civics then you have to switch t...

Enough's enough: added to ECI, ENB, BCE and AQN right at the open. Nothing justifies the degree of this sell-off. The only news on ECI I can see is, "Enercare announces monthly dividend." What needs to be justified? Everyone is either just right or maybe six months to early with their buying. If so...
