or retirement;
Why are these selected few allowed to save for retirement this way? Why are they not restricted to the 18% like the rest of us working stiffs?

Is because it can't be measured or quantified?

First time I heard about something like this was last night just before poker guy's wife was in same situation but I didn't ask for clarification. Two years pay as long as she doesn't get a new job.

Re: Power of Dividend Growth 2011 (and beyond)

Thus whether equity is 30%, 60% or 100% of one's portfolio, I still don't see why one would necessarily change the number of holdings in their equity allocation. Not what I'm saying surely you must understand that. Three all Canadian portfolios all shown using the same conventions, I think. Top 24 ...

Re: Power of Dividend Growth 2011 (and beyond)

Well I think the amount of RY is relevant, I'd like to know if they are just tracking the TSX or not with "some" of their weightings, I see they are about 36% financial. Brian, MAW104 is made up of 7 different mutual funds, only one of them which is Canadian equity (currently 14.5%). The amount of ...

Re: Power of Dividend Growth 2011 (and beyond)

Brian, it is not relevant how much RY is of MAW104. MAW104 is a mix of 7 MAW funds (to be global balanced). As for comparing a personal portfolio to a fund of $3B or so in assets of 50 stocks doesn't mean a $1-2 million personal portfolio should have 50 stocks. The fund manager has a cast of staff ...

Re: Power of Dividend Growth 2011 (and beyond)

Unless you are establishing a position (as I am in REITs), anything below 1% is noise. For an individual investor I never understood the fascination with holding 30, 40 or 50 different stocks. Surely there has to be more than a bit of redundancy? I always felt that a stock needed to have about a 3%...

I'm trying to understand the argument it seems to me this is just a tax break and when tax breaks are taken away, if there are a lot of people getting it, there is an outcry. People getting the tax break are coming up with all kinds of rationale for keeping it? "An investment analyst is supported by...

Re: Life Insurance As An Asset Class

I wonder how many people on here have Life Insurance as an investment? Are many using it as an alternative to fixed income, as an estate multiplier any other use? Seems very illiquid and loss of control to me. eg - $104,000 per year will generate $3.5 million on both our deaths, I think our daughter...

Re: Any questions about CPP?

Brian, be careful of your zero years in the calculation. I had to watch that and take my CPP 'early' to avoid those penalties. I sort of remember some info, IIRC you adjust about 2.5% for each (year....?) So for someone retiring at 65 with max contributions it's a 42% increase for myself it's only ...

Re: Any questions about CPP?

Last year I called in to get an estimate of my CPP. They ran a calculation and at 65 the monthly amount was estimated at $1032. When I go to "My Service Canada" I get an estimate of $1582.12 at 65. According to Doug Runchey the online calculator is good for near term estimates but longer term it cal...

Those proceeds can only be rolled into a beneficiary's RRSP if that person has RRSP contribution room.
Hmmm not sure about this, it can be rolled in only if its a spouse or disabled I thought. No such thing as rolling into for a beneficiary, you could contribute it if there is room maybe.
