Re: Cellphones 2023 and onwards [and plans]
Wow. Thanks for the heads up guys. I guess the south shore of Lake Ontario doesn't have the volume of customers they want, although I see they have 3 outlets in St Catharines (my town) and 2 in the Falls.

I want to give Freedom another try. When I communicated with them last fall the agent told me they couldn't port my area code 905 or 289 numbers to their system.

My T% for the US $GIC was from TD Bank (where I have a US$ bank account). It was in US$ as that was the total interest earned.

Thanks for the answers. I thought I needed to convert it, but somehow doubted myself.
Unwise, it is the amount I earned and was not converted by TD.

Re: GIC Taxation
This year, for the first time, I bought and cashed a GIC in US dollars, using money from my US dollar account. I have received a T5 for the interest and it is in box 13 "Interest From Canadaian Sources". Do I convert this at the BoC exchange rate to report it on my Income Tax for 2023?

Re: Computer password security
I tried the site. It has my name and a previous address (4+ years out of date), and has me being 97 years old (out by more than 2 decades). While there are 3 breaches noted, it does not give me any information about passwords. I know of 2 breaches - Shoppers where I believe I never had a password, or it was a simple one for one time use (I was trying to get Covid shots) and UnderArmor where they leaked my Map My Run password which uses a password I use on unimportant sites. Without the password information I'm no further ahead, except I now know there were three breaches not two as Have I Been Pwned identified.

Good Information, everyone. Thanks. I'll quit using the VPN. I had to quit using it anyway to get onto Home Trust's site when travelling and rarely use it at home.
I don't do anything interesting enough for anyone to want to know where I am.

Re: Computer problems
I thought a VPN protected me from all evils when I was using my computer on a shared network (say a hotel) or on a network at a rental VRBO etc.). All the sites - my bank Can Trust) and credit cards would all be HTTPS. If I'm just as safe for my one purpose - to check my card balance (& accuracy) at Home Trust and pay them (through TD-CT) when I'm travelling - then I guess I don't need to use a VPN.Bylo Selhi wrote: ↑18 Jan 2024 14:32 In addition to what Unwise suggests, I'd ask what is the need for a VPN in the first place? As long as you have an HTTPS connection your web sessions are all encrypted.

Re: Problems when using a VPN
Iin response to Unwise's questions:
1) Have you tried the VPN when in Canada? Does it still fail?
Yes I've tried it on both my computers in Canada and it fails.
2) How do you know when it fails? Does the website not load/time out on its homepage, or does it give you a specific error message?
"Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://www.ezcardinfo.com/api/bvalue/hometrust" on this server."
3) Or does it fail after seeing the homepage and entering your credentials to logon and say it doesn't allow access?
It fails when I try to access the site, in order to log in. I don't get to the home page as I get this message immediately.

Problems when using a VPN
This is less a computer problem, and more a user (me) problem. I have two credit cards that do not let me access my accounts when I use a VPN (Tunnel Bear's free version). When we are travelling for a month or so, I need to check one of these cards (Home Trust) so that I pay the balance and don't incur interest charges. I don't use the other card when we are away. All other sites work fine with the VPN. Is there something I am doing wrong (I've tried using both US and Canadian servers (if that's the right term) with the same result or is there something I can do in the VPN to allow me to access the site? I Thanks for any help - clearly VPNs are something I know little about.

Re: Safety deposit boxes
My Canada Trust branch has boxes from several closed branches also. My box is 123A with the "A" identifying the branch it is from so it can be found. Like Bylo I know where it is located in the vault and always tell them that it is behind the (vault) door and at waist height. That always works. I go to the box twice a year as I swap USB keys that are my current financial and other important data backups for the ones I put in there six months ago.

Re: Flu vaccines
I got my flu shot 3 or 4 days after receiving the letter from Dr. Moore (Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health) saying I was old and should get my vaccine shot tout de suite. The pharmacy was able to take me right away, but had none of the old folks dose. Last year I hunted around and tried to find it - unsuccessfully - and couldn't be bothered to do so this year. If it is just a larger dose of the regular vaccine, you'd think that direction could be given to the pharmacies etc. to just load and shoot the higher dose.

Re: New T3 requirements for joint accounts [that might be bare trusts]
As for the point about "joint accounts" being added to the assets for probate. I executed an Ontario estate in 2022 and saw no requirement for that, nor did I add those assets to the list of probated assets or pay any fee associated with the joint assets. Unless my lawyer did not notice that the majority of the assets of the deceased were in joint ownership and forgot to mention it, they did not say that needed to be done either. So, do you mind letting us know where you got that idea from? The discussion has moved well past this point and I don't wish to pull it off track. However, to answer the question, my understanding of the changes to Ontario's probate process under the "new" rules comes from reading about the cha...

Re: New T3 requirements for joint accounts [that might be bare trusts]
This is my understanding. Under the former probate rules (pre-Wynne) this would have removed assets from probate. My understanding is that the rules changed with the new system. In our case, it is clear who owns the assets as we have each paid the taxes, received any communications etc. on the accounts where our name is listed first.

Re: New T3 requirements for joint accounts [that might be bare trusts]
If I am understanding the discussion correctly, I believe another stiuation that creates a bare trust that will require a Schedle 15, will be when a couple hold investment assets jointly. In our case my assets are held jointly with my wife, with my name first, and I pay all the taxes. My wife's assets are held jointly, with me, with her name first and she pays all the taxes. It seems we will each need to file a Schedule 15 as there seems to be two bare trusts.
In Ontario, the joint ownership will not remove the assets from probate but will make transferring the assets upon death, one step easier.

Just finished Goodbye Eastern Europe. I read a write up about it in the Economist and lucked in to being the first to get it from the library. I didn't know much about the history of the area. Interesting book and easy to read.
Also a thanks to CROCKD for the reminder about Martin Cruz Smith. I've liked his books and had lost track of him. I've just checked out Independence Square from the library.

Re: Best Credit Card (2021 - 2025)
I have not checked my other cards, but in reviewing the Home Trust "Disclosure Statement" that came with our renewal cards I see there is a $12.00 Inactive Fee "following each 12 months of account inactivity".
My point is that you might want to see if this is true for your Scotia Momentum card and if it is, it likely would be better to cancel it (after they reverse the fraudulent charges!), rather than not use it.

Re: Covid 19 - Vaccine shots
I too had no reaction to the first 2 shots of the vaccine (Moderna) but did to the third (Phizer). When I had my reaction, my family doctor was not able to do much to help. Presumably this was new to him. The ball finally got rolling when I was able to access an Internal Medicine doctor who after a thorough examination and history taking, referred me to a reheumatologist (as a priority case). The rheumatologist I saw said she had seen other cases, but of course this is anecdotal. My case was not reported anywhere and this could be the case with others. I agree the incidence is likely very low, but my reaction to the third shot has left me feeling I'm better to avoid the vaccine and risk catching Covid.

Re: Covid 19 - Vaccine shots
I found the aritcle very interesting. It reflects many of the symthoms I had. While there has been no reoccurance (knocking on wood) it has left the osteo arthritis in my thumbs and wrists sigificantly worse (or if it didn't cause it to be worse, it is worse after having had the reaction I mentioned in my post above).

Re: Covid 19 - Vaccine shots
I’ll have to read this study closely to see if & how it applies to earlier vaccinations. I stopped vaccinating after the third dose which really messed me up, for several months. A rheumatologist eventually diagnosed it as rheumatoid arthritis and started me on steroids and a drug I injected ( Methotrexate- so I told the world I was on meth). The steroid knocked the inflammation out of me quickly - although I took declining doses over 8 weeks - and I stopped the methotrexate. Knock on wood nothing since then (& never anything like this before), although at 74 I have some arthritis in my thumbs, wrists and X-rays show it in my back. I’ve been too afraid to try another booster in case of a repeat of the attack.
