Re: Other ways than Computershare to hold securities directly?
I spoke with Computershare Canada and found out some of the information I posted earlier was wrong. I'd like to correct that. - TFSAs and RRSPs are NOT available, except to people whose employers have offered them an ESPP (Employee Share Purchase Plan) through Computershare Canada. - In order for you to transfer a security to CSC, the original transfer agent of the security also must be Computershare. If the transfer agent is another company, you could only transfer it to that company for direct registration, not to CSC. - In order to receive a DRIP, the original equity issuer must offer a DRIP program. CSC has no ability offer DRIP payments unless the issuer provides the plan. - If you wish to transfer securities to CSC, you should initiat...

I disagree due to the the energy issues Germany is having because of their brain damaged decision to eliminate nuclear. Power is costing them a lot more than it used to, and those prices are likely to go up only. Between this and the cratering of a lot of industry in Germany, I don't see growth for Bimmer sales.freedom2022 wrote: ↑19 Feb 2024 07:38 I'd rather buy BMW stocks than Tesla stocks.

Re: Other ways than Computershare to hold securities directly?
Computershare is a transfer agent. It manages shareholder ledgers on behalf of companies. Every listed security uses an agent, and only one. Investor Relations of the company you wish to purchase will tell you who they use. It may or may not be Computershare (though it's the largest one) To hold shares more directly, you may hold them with the transfer agent as book-entry (the way you suggest), removing the middlemen brokers. Computershare will only sell you shares of their clients. So, to hold shares with "the transfer agent", you may need to create multiple accounts with multiple transfer agents. You used to be able to order old-fashioned share certificates from the transfer agent. Dividend cheques would be mailed to your house...

Other ways than Computershare to hold securities directly?
Hi:
I'm aware of Computershare, and of holding stock certificates. In Canada, are there any ways to hold securities directly other than those?
Also, for Computershare, is there a good description somewhere of what they allow you and don't allow you to do with your securities? I find their website FAQ not great.
Thanks.

Is there a way to reduce hold times on cheques at TD Bank?
Hi:
About 5 business days ago, I deposited a cheque (from myself at another institution) for $11,000 into my TD chequing account. It still hasn't cleared.
I'm told it will clear by end of today.
My holdings with the TD companies are in the mid- to high 6-digit region. Is there a way to get the hold times reduced? I can't remember for sure, but I could swear my branch manager told me they were going to reduce my hold times about a year ago, but apparently that may not have happened. OF course, that branch manager has been moved to another office, so I can't speak with her. Same with the assistant manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.

In continuing with the trend of talking about uranium, I'm leaning towards buying another 1/4 allocation of Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (U.UN). It's almost doubled in price since I bought it about 4 or 5 months ago. From what I'm reading in the news, there will be more need for nuclear fuel going forward.

I saw that Lifelabs Class Action Suit. The great thing is, if you want to become a suit member, they force you to enter your health card number into the online form. So there's always the chance that, while trying to get restitution, even more of your data gets stolen.
Okay, sorry, I know that's a depressing thought.

Re: Linking bank accounts to software?
A couple of thoughts:
First, it's against the Terms of Service/Account Terms to let another system log on using your credentials. So even if no funds were lost, they would have the right to cancel your account. I'm sure you've seen the fine print which reads that you won't share your logon credentials with anyone except someone with legal authority.
Second, some institutions offer options. Some banking/brokerage websites let you manually log on and download data in several formats.
For example, TD Easyweb lets you download data in CSV, Quicken, Quickbooks, MS Money. WebBroker lets you download your data in .CSV format.

Did Boyd Group ever clean up that messy situation in which the company was paying for all kinds of stuff for the CEO they shouldn't have? Is it still the same CEO from years ago?
The company is intriguing. I hate to say it, but I would seriously consider betting on this as most people drive like boneheads.

Re: SMF Data Pull from Yahoo [using smfGetYahooPortfolioView() function]
I'm trying to do this the way you guys are suggesting, using the above workbooks you posted. However, when prompted to enable updates, I'm still getting:
Unable to Refresh. We couldn't get values from a linked workbook. It offered me the "Manage Workbook Links" sidebar.
I don't know much about this, but I could tell that it was trying to look for the .xla file in the wrong place, so I used the 3 dots menu to to point it to the right path. Man, some of Excel's interface is just awful and very counterintuitive. Now, it simply draws dashes instead of downloading valid data.

Re: How to download data?
Thanks BRIAN5000 for the generous offer. However, I have a lot of private stuff on the spreadsheet, and it would take quite a while to remove it.
I tried the history function, and it appeared to fetch correct data. But I'm looking for whatever function is simplest. 99% of the time, all I need is last price. As I understand it, Yahoo removed an earlier function (Can't remember the name of it) that allowed for simple, one item quotes.
Is there no substitute for whatever Yahoo disabled? Can I use another data source?

Re: SMF Data Pull from Yahoo [using smfGetYahooPortfolioView() function]
While I'm researching how to do simpler queries, I'd like to come back to this for a moment.
I tried copying and pasting the formulas for arrays that Peculiar_Investor made for me. I'm just getting #NAME? instead of proper data.
Is there a way to fix that? It prompts me to update the location of the SMF Add-in, but after I do, I still get the same errors.
Also, when I open the actual file he made for me, it throws an error:
"Unable to Refresh". We could get updated values from a linked workbook".

Does anyone know how to formulate simple queries for the SMF add-in?
I finally got it loaded and working, but the documentation for it is..well...a mess, and I don't understand it.

Thanks, but why do we keep pushing arrays. This is a yet another order of complexity more than I need.
Or was your intention that I'd learn to formulate simple queries using the array example? If so, I don't understand how this works at all.
I simply need last price. Nothing else. Nothing this fancy or complex.

I don't want to use extras sheets/workbooks. That's just another layer of complexity of things to go wrong.
No one can give me an example of a string to use to grab a common stock price?

So, this appears not work when I try to copy and paste queries into my own spreadsheet.
For one thing, I believe it was created as an array, yes? If so, can you instead show me how to just create a query that's not part of an array.
And BTW, my browser is not showing any record of an original post like the one your described above, offering me a template in my PMs.
Specifically, where you're saying you posted "Check your PMs for a test spreadsheet that pulls data from Yahoo for the symbols you mentioned." No such post in my browser, even after several refreshes.
