Re: Retirement - is it over-rated?

So my retirement really started Friday. George I've been away, so missed this news. Congratulations. "The law is a jealous mistress" we were told in law school. And so she proved to be. That she was has only added to the pleasure of retirement. I retired 65 months ago and have enjoyed it immensely....

Thank you to all posters, past and present. This site has educated me (no easy task) on many financial matters and helped me make AND save a lot of money. It has also helped me secure a solid future for myself and DW and indirectly, for family and friends. For which I am very grateful to you all. C...

Re: What did you Buy? What might you buy? (2018)

A rung on a 5 yr GIC ladder matured this morning. I just purchased a new 5 yr rung at 2.81%, the best 5 yr rate available today at RBCDI. The ockham household's fixed income portfolio (all in RRSPs) consists largely of four ladders: three 5 yr GIC ladders and one 8-9 yr prov strip bond ladder. I'll ...

The answer to my own question is that there is a 10 year as-an-adult minimum residency requirement to qualify for OAS.

Re: Optional Additional CPP

But really I just LIKE getting a gov’t cheque every month. And my basic policy is to defer tax and take benefits early :) So what would you do in this more extreme example: A grandparent immigrates to Canada, sponsored by his family, at age 64. He can apply for OAS at age 65, and he'll get 1/40 of ...

Re: $450K to invest for six months -- what would you do?

How critical is it that you get all the money back? Surely the key question. The OP says that $1K on the upside "doesn't move the needle." OK. So far, so good. But it's the downside that matters here. How many $K on the downside does it take to move the OP's needle?? "Money necessary to meet short ...

Re: Bonds - Rolling Down The Yield Curve, theory vs real-life experience

I played with this idea briefly some 15 years ago -- trying to trade bonds around the "sweet spot" on the yield curve, where "sweet spot" is defined as the steepest part of the yield curve. Soon gave up. The sweet spot moves, disappears, reappears elsewhere. Bond trading is expensive, and bond prici...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2018)

Earlier today sold my only REIT, Riocan (REI.UN). It's a position I opened way back in Feb 2006. Gain of 47.52% exclusive of the monthly distributions. A company with dimming prospects, it would seem, plus I don't really need the monthly cash flow. I'll use the sale proceeds to add to some existing ...

Earlier today did my annual TFSA purchase -- added to existing position in VXC. VXC is a near to ideal product for those who value frugality, simplicity, diversity, and passivity. I say "near to ideal" and not "ideal" because I continue to wait for Vanguard to shave a few bps off its .27 mer.

Me, been waiting for BlackRock's official year-end performance numbers. Not yet available. I've always found Morningstar's performance numbers to be prompt and accurate. My 2017 return comes in at about 6.7% on a balanced portfolio (55/45 equity to fixed and cash) in withdrawal mode, with the equity divided about 2-1 Canada/ex-Canada. A problem with my Canada equity holdings, all non-registered, is that of weighing lagging performance against realizing cap gains. Fo...

How do you plan to pay it? Short answer: With dividends from USD ETFs. Long answer: In the short term from my corporate investment accounts at Scotia, but being retired I'm drawing those down over the next few years. Long term from my RBC-DI RRSP and possibly RBC-DI non-registered account which doe...

I live in Ontario. I drive mostly in Ontario and occasionally in Quebec. I do not drive to US. Is Auto Insurance Liability Coverage $1 million enough? Is $2 million overkill? I carry the max available, which in my case is $10M. The incremental premium cost of adding millions to third party liabilit...

How many decades of one's life does an investor have to chase a dream of outperformance. At my age, I for one don't have many left (if any). I do realize that the RRSP funding formula is fair (more or less) but was alluding more towards what SkaSka said. Re: Norbert's Gambit - which online brokerage is best?

I know RBC and BMO online brokerages can have a NG transaction done without calling/emailing. Does one need to wait 4 days as well at RBC and BMO? At BMOIL, you do NG in under 4 minutes (i.e., basically the amount of time it takes to type out your buy/sell instructions). Buy an interlisted stock in...

......... I would definitely pick GEM over Hot Potato. By squishing US and International equities into one asset class, you are moving further away from GEM. Re: Adding Bonds to an Equity Portfolio?

For myself I would never hold a bond outside of a registered account. After taxes and inflation you would be lucky to have your head above water. For myself, I would never waste registered account space that could grow for 30+ years on bonds. A word of caution. In the early '90s, in my registered a...
