Re: Strategy for stock market correction

We are in our early 70's. We have combined pensions of 70k including CPP and OAS. We have 900k in registered and TFSAs . Our ratio has reached 60% stocks and the balance is fixed income. Capital preservation is an important thing so I have decided to reduce my stock holdings to 30% over the coarse ...

Re: What did you sell? What might you sell? (2018)

I can understand why someone might look at the equity portion separate from the fixed component, but have no idea why Brian, for example, would break it down further within the equity portion. Yes we've talked about this before. I try to use conventional/methods when posting, for example I posted I...

Re: What's wrong with Canadian market?

The Canadian market is dominated by energy, materials and financials. This shouldn't be a concern as we have the ability to diversify by investing in US stocks. Especially within our RRSP or RRIF funds.

Re: What did you Buy? What might you buy? (2018)

A busy day for our TFSAs. My strategy is solely focused on dividend payers. I sold my position in NWC and Boston Pizza and reduced my position with the telcos and utilities. Used the proceeds to buy Northview Reit, Rogers Sugar and Enercare all in equal portions. I like and understand their operatio...

I looking at trimming some by my dividend payers inside my TFSA and the proceeds will be used to buy Rogers Sugar and Enercare. Both look like solid and stable dividend payers. My goal is to use our TFSAs as a source for dividends.

my biggest Canadian position is RY at 3.8 and my largest USA positions are a 4 way tie between Amazon, Apple, Google and FB at 4% each. Might trim them if I can find something with better fundamentals and growth. Amazon is excluded from any fundamental analysis. If it ever quit expanding it could pr...

Re: Why I Don't Invest In REITs

TheGipper: Did you actually find a Price/FFO ratio somewhere for WPT? I couldn't find one, and haven't gotten around to calculating the true ratio. Of course, most websites just try to calculate P/E which is way off for REITs. No I haven't found that ratio. According to the RBC AD research net earn...

Re: Why I Don't Invest In REITs

Anyone know why WPT Industrial REIT (WIR.U) has such an uneven earnings record? It's just all over the place. I'm not necessarily saying that's bad, but is there an explanation? Recent merger/acquisition? I too, invest in REITs. You make a valid point. The 2017 numbers quarter by quarter look stron...

Re: Marijuana Legalization [Investment opportunities]

I predict that a lot of people will get burnt bad investing in this sector. It's currently a speculators market. Some day that will end and the focus will be on fundamentals . I expect this will happen in late 2018 and early 2019. When fundamentals become the focus this market will crash. The market...

Bought 900 shares in AAR.UN. I like the 6 PE and a 4.8 yield. I like the narrative. In the age of Amazon and e-commerce the demand for warehouse space is very strong. They have a solid footprint in both Canada and the USA. It also fits in with my strategy for our TFSAs. Just sold it for a nice shor...

Re: Why I Don't Invest In REITs

Alas, I am also 'victim' of this acquisition. This will be a double for me in a fairly short period of time. I just bought it on January 3 and sold it today. My proceeds went into WIR.U which operates a similar REIT. With the rise of e-commerce the demand for warehouse space is going up. Blacklston...

Higher yields? Tax advantages within a taxable account? Should be a good investment inside a TFSA. No need to concern oneself with the tax complexities.

Does any of the Canadian discount brokerages allow a US$ investment account to be
held in a RIF account?
My RBC Action Direct RRIF allows me to do this. It also allows me to make withdrawals in USA dollars.

Initiated a new position in (NWL) Newel Brands. This stock had been hit hard in the last quarter or so with a big miss and then guiding lower. Fundamentally it's very cheap, especially for a US consumer stock. Nice suite of products that are of the repeat purchase variety; very dull and boring busi...

I have my stocks split between the USA and Canada markets 50/50. I have been tracking my returns since January 1 2009 and I have averaged 21% per annum. This past year I averaged 11.6%. I am apprehensive about 2018 but I will stay the coarse. I retired on January 1 2009 and was concerned about the s...

I've got a few TFSAs and I've been in the process of consolidating the money into a single TFSA. I'm reluctant to pay the closure fee (typically about $150) so I've left about $100 in each of the inactive ones. When I tried to take my Qtrade TFSA balance down to about $100 they changed the amount o...

I will continue to use Turbo Tax . It has all my past filings and makes easier and faster to complete my return. I know it costs a little more. It's still a lot better then what I was paying accountants 10 years ago.

Just a hint of slower growth or a hint of a recession will put a halt to rate increases. There isn't a sign of inflation and the massive global supply chain makes inflationary pressure difficult. I figure central bankers are boosting the rates in a slow gradual manner so they have some room in the e...

I bought a 10k position in CM. I was impressed with the earnings it is getting from it's US acquisition. Something like 18% of earnings and strong guidance of growth in 2018. Just may-be this bank is starting to making the right moves.
